    Oscar Time!

With the Academy releasing nominations this week, it’s hard to think about the actual awards without thinking about the PR circus its become. What at first comes off as a display of recognition for some great work has mutated into just another way for those rich studios to take your money.

How often are your favorite films, perfomances, etc. up for the top honors? So much is left behind because of course, all these voters seem to have short term memory loss and nothing pre-October is seriously considered. Yeah, they’ll be the one dark horse that sneaks in out of nowhere like this years “Little Miss Sunshine” but the Fargos, Seasbiscuits and Cinderella Men don’t get much ink after those initial “and the surprise of the year nomination went to…” articles.

Increasingly all this seems to be fueled by marketing. Basically, the Oscars have become the foundation for boosting that dark wintery season where people just don’t go out to the movies much. The big movies for the younger crowd have to be released in the summer cause kids have to go to school. It’s up to us older people to go out and keep the box office alive by watching these prestige films. Show me an intellectual film in June and I just wouldn’t appreciate it. I sure wouldn’t tell my friends about it.

Since studios spend so much money making new films, they’re absolutely terrified of not making that money back. So why even take a chance. Instead, just like the plots are formulaic, the release schedules are as well. At this time of the year, we’re supposed to be in serious mode. And if we’re in the mood for something light, well let’s just remind you how much you want to be in serious mode by talking and talking about this great movie that’s up for all the awards.

  • Purchase a bulb on our marquee

NORWALK, OH — We are currently trying to raise some funds to help purchase some newer projection equipment, restore the marquee, sponsor some live plays and help with operating costs.

We have over 800 bulbs on our marquee and for $50.00, individuals and businesses can “purchase” a bulb. In return, you will get your name or business name listed in our live event programs for one full year.

We have owned the Norwalk Theatre for about two months and need some help to get it off the ground. This is a great way for people who want to see another historic art deco theatre survive, to help out.

Go to our website and check out the pictures of our theatre and the mailing address if you would like to “purchase” a bulb. You can also see the magnificient marquee on our website, too. You may purchase more than one bulb if you would like. Each bulb you purchase can have a separate name listed in our programs.

    Thanks for your help!

    Changes to rating system coming

After years of secrecy, the MPAA is finally making some changes and allowing more information on their ratings system to be available to the public. Possibly because of the popular 2006 documentary, “This Film is Not Yet Rated”, the association will start disclosing the identities of its senior members and enlarge their appeals board.

The secretive movie ratings system—the bane of Hollywood filmmakers, who often complain that its judgments are inconsistent—is about to get an overhaul.

For the first time in its 38-year history, the group that operates the system plans to make its ratings rules and regulations public. It will also describe the standards for each rating, and detail the appeal process.

Suzuki FLix debuts at auto show

Sure to be the dream car of many here, Suzuki showed off their new movie theater car at a recent auto show.

One of the concept vehicles at NAIAS which somehow seemed to slip below the radar was the silver-screen-inspired XL7 Flix concept. The Flix concept offers film enthusiasts the ultimate mobile movie experience, being outfitted with an in-vehicle movie system. After parking at the optimal film-viewing destination, Flix’s clamshell roof can be opened, revealing a maximum-size moonroof that serves as a 40-inch movie screen.

Additionally, the XL7 concept’s front roof panel vents, giving way to a high-density digital projection system to display a family’s movie of choice.
