Pearl River movie theater deal may be more complicated

PEARL RIVER, NY — With multiple interests now involved, the fight for the future of the Pearl River Theater is heating up.

Plans to resurrect the old Pearl River Movie Theater have become more complicated now that the building’s owner wants to turn it into commercial space.

Edmund Lane, principal of Skyview Plaza Development Corp., had proposed building 12 condominiums at the Central Avenue building, but he was prevented from doing so because he needed a zone change for senior housing.

  • Is there anyone looking for parts from a major light board?

We’ve uncovered what appears to be the bulk (or all) of a Major light board in a warehouse in SE Florida. Anyone who might be interested in any or all of it – free of charge- is welcome to contact me. It’s all in dry storage and most of it is at ground level with no steps (some of the parts are on a second level). If anyone is interested, you can . Again, this is all free for the taking.

Time to book a trip to Bangkok!

I have just returned from Bangkok – with of course cinema visits at every opportunity —I could not find any ‘older cinemas’ but there are countless brand new multi-screens.

I came upon three special screens in the Paragon Multiplex – this cinema on the sixth/seventh floor of a massive shopping complex has 14 ordinary screens, an IMAX and these three specials [sponsored by Nokia]. The normal ticket price was 140/150 bhat [ £2/2.10p – so low??] but these screens charged 500 bhat [£6.50] – the chairs give back and leg massage and are supplied with blankets and pillows!! – see the photos – I am supprised the UK/US chains don’t copy!??

  • Former titan of multiplexes to be demolished

WAUKEGAN, IL — The former largest theater in America, the Lakehurst Cinema, will be torn down for a hotel. Plans to get rid of it sped up when numerous fire code violations were recently reported.

The Lakehurst Cinema, which was briefly the king of the multiplex world when it featured 12 screens in 1987, has locked the doors as plans move forward to build a Holiday Inn Express on the Waukegan Road site.

“We received a complaint regarding the heat. People told us there was no heat in one of the theaters,” Jurkovac said. “So we went out there right away with the fire department, and it turned out there was more than just no heat.”

    Men-Crying-Movies

I hate the feeling when I know it’s coming. The film is reaching its climax and some watershed moment turns into a sad realization. Then it happens. I feel the tears coming on and I discreetly make sure the people sitting next to me don’t notice. The blinking, excessive blinking takes over. Hopefully, I can widen my eyes enough to drown the tears or just think of something completely off subject like igloos to take my mind off things. Sometimes I’m successful, sometimes not.

I have a little fear about crying during movies. Not that I think I’m any less of a man for doing it but I just get a little embarrassed. It’s just that I find watching movies to be a very personal endeavor. When you experience an intimate moment like that, it feels a bit odd to have all these strangers around you.

There are plenty of plot developments that will get me a little teary-eyed. While a death certainly gets me most of the time, I am most helpless when it comes to reunions. “Forrest Gump”, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Love Actually”, name your poison. I succumb to them all. But don’t tell anyone that.

  • Eugene DeRosa, architect of the Apollo Theatre

Eugene DeRosa, architect of the Apollo Theatre, was my uncle, my father’s older brother. He was born in the Calabria region of Italy in 1894. He emigrated to the United States with his parents sometime between 1894 and 1898. They arrived through Ellis Island and settled in New York. The Depression ruined the family fortunes. I do not know what Eugene did after.

My father was born in 1898 in New York. He was named Felix, although he went by the name of Phil. My father also became an architect and worked with his brother Eugene. I would strongly suggest that he also worked on the Apollo, although not to the extent to gain any official credit. During the Depression, he sold insurance for Prudential, returning to practice architecture during the War and after until his death. He settled in Chappaqua, New York, where he met my mother, marrying at the age of 48.

  • Berkeley Plaza Theatre could reopen in February

MARTINSBURG, WV — After a devastating fire that practically destroyed it the Berkeley Plaza Theatre could be back next month.

Elliott said only five of the seven auditoriums, each outfitted with new screens and curtains, initially will be opened for movie showings. The remaining two need more work because they received the most damage, but he plans to eventually reopen them.

“I want to have a special grand opening,” Elliott said. “We’re going to work something up.”

He also wants to see the multiplex reopen for the patrons who appreciate the affordable movie tickets — $3 for afternoon matinees, and $5 for evening screenings.

Looking for vintage seat end piece

Hello. I’m not sure if you can help me or not, but I figured I might try here.

I just bought 6 vintage seats that I would like to restore for my home theater. Unfortunately it only came with 3 end pieces, and I’d like to get a 4th. The only markings I can find are LEV a model number 12-119 and either a L or R indicating I believe which side it is for.

They are red with a wood arm rest and have lights in them.

    I’ve put pictures up:
