    The Power of Reviews

I used to be wooed by trailers, voluntarily sucked into the theater with just a glimpse of excitement. I used to give credence to word of mouth and make it over to the theater purely based on what other people said. Recently though however, specifically the last five years, I’ve thrown that all away and now base which movies I go out and see entirely on reviews.

Maybe it’s the cost of movies. As evidence by our recent CT poll and comments made on the pages, it seems like all of us are getting a little fed up with the skyrocketing price of first run films these days. I’ve learned to get over it by simply choosing films more wisely. That way, if I’m going to spend that money on the movie, the parking and possibly concessions, at least I feel like I’m guaranteed to get something in return.

It becomes obsessive though. I check sites like Rotten Tomatoes so often to see what everyone is saying that by the time the movie comes out, I’m a little sick of hearing about it. I just have to know the opinions though; the random opinions, the consensus opinion and of course the thoughts of my personal favorite journalists.

There’s more at stake too by living this kind of life. How about compromising friendships? Frequently, I’ll receive enthusiastic recommendations from a peer urging me to see a certain picture but I’ll have to turn them down because of something I read. They’ll be in shock and think I’m kidding. Eventually, they’ll just be plain insulted.

  • The New Yorker on the future of the film industry

A very interesting commentary in the New Yorker appeared that discusses a number of topics brewing in movies. David Denby writes about the fate of films if they’re to be seen on iPods, the mentality of big studios heeding to the wishes of investors counterpointed with the workings of specialty divisions, and of course the state of the modern movie theater.

The neighborhood theatres that thrived at the same time were easier to deal with. Slipping in and out of them, we avoided the stern white-shoed matrons who patrolled the aisles; sometimes we arrived in the middle of the movie and stayed on until it reached the same point in the next show—we just wanted to go to the movies.

Even now, moviegoing is informal and spontaneous. Still, we long to be overwhelmed by that flush of emotion when image, language, movement, and music merge.

A rewarding piece well worth the time it takes to mine your way through it. To read the full article, visit The New Yorker.

  • Theater seat totals: Which trade book lists them?

Looked at past editions of Film Daily Yearbook in the Fort Lee, NJ library and didn’t see the seat totals listed for individual theaters nationwide which I had thought they published. But they do list each theater chain and theaters by state.

Or maybe, were they listed in the International Motion Picture Almanac? I am looking for several theater seat totals from the early 1970’s which are not listed on this site.

Which books should I check please?

    Thank You Much.

New Jersey cinema highlights the films of India

NORTH BERGEN, NJ — Not just a single screen theater but a multiplex, Cineplaza, committed to Indian films is turning heads in North Jersey. With more theaters like this sprouting up around the country, are specialized foreign film centers, the next way art houses will attempt to separate themselves from the chains?

Swollen ticket lines, shouting children, tempers rising as the movies sold out: This was any suburban multiplex during the holidays.

    But different.

Vada pav sandwiches and mango kulfi were sold at the concession stand. Conversations were in Gujarati or Hindi. A poster in the lobby advertised an action film starring Aishwarya Rai on one of six screens showing Indian cinema.

  • Michael Jackson’s DVD Number ones (2nd request)

I have had another look at the DVD and I am sure the theater would have to be in the USA. The track is “You are not alone” and the theater is truly a national treasure.
