  • How to buy old theater

I retired from the military about 1 ½ years ago and it has been a long time dream of mine to own and operate an old-fashioned single screen movie theater. I have worked at a military base theater’s concession stand and as a movie projectionist. My question is how do I start the process of developing a business plan to aquire funding to purchase an old theater? I see there are plenty of old theaters out there. Any help would be much appreciated. Please contact me at .

    Best,

Cinema owner protests new films by shutting down theater

HOOPESTON, IL — The Lorraine Theatre was recently shut down in protest over the new films from Hollywood.

A small-town theater owner says he wasn’t trying to send Hollywood a message when he shut down for two weeks rather than show box-office leader “Jackass 2” or other new releases that he calls, “drivel.”

“The movies are so bad and I don’t need the money … I just didn’t think I should use my high-quality facilities to show people vomiting on screen,” said Boardman, whose theaters boast a high-tech, eight- channel digital sound system.

For more on this, read theAssociated Press Article or visit the Lorraine Theatre’s Website.

  • Madison South Towne Cinemas closed

Marcus Theatres seems to be on a closing spree, they recently closed the 5 screen South Towne Cinemas in Madison, WI. They are going to build a new 12 screen complex about a half-mile east of this closed cinema. This theater never really did that well and in recent years was a “discount” first-run house. It was in very tough shape.

No info on the inclusion of either digital screens or one of the Marcus “Ultra-Screens” in the new complex. It will not open until sometime next year.

A group formed by members of the local community is campaigning to raise enough funds to reopen the cinema. There is a website which has more infomation and links to members of the campaign: Woolton Picture House Homepage.

    Campaign ad hits theater

TWIN CITIES, MN — Much to the audience’s surprise, a candidate for county sheriff started running a campaign ad in one theater.

Going to the movies is the ultimate form of escapism — or at least it was until Friday.

That was when the curtain came up before the 7:30 showing of “The Illusionist” at the Highland Theater, and where there materialized a leading man so familiar to the St. Paul audience that some in the theater gasped at his sudden appearance on the silver screen.

It was former Police Chief Bill Finney. Seems he’s running for Ramsey County sheriff.

  • Globe Theater Reconstruction

GLOBE, AZ — After the devastating fire, Globe-Miami’s own Globe Theater is being rebuilt. The theater will be built over the lot of the building next store that was the Trust/Hotel building. The new Globe will be built with four screens and stadium seating. A brick face will surround the theater using some of the original bricks from the Hotel.

The marquee is being spruced up a bit; the original marquee was changed in the 1960’s-1970, but is being put back to the original design with neon lignting all around the historic sign. After the restoration of the marquee, the marquee will be place on the corner of Broad and Cedar Streets. This is an exiciting move forward for this historic small-town community.
