went out to see “No Country for Old Men”, a decent Coen Bros. movie that has a bad ending. It was in one of those smaller screens, and the crowd behaved fine. The worst part during my movie trip? The traffic getting out was a bit tough, since right now is the busiest time of year for the mall rather than the theater. Seems that Rockaway Mall is now making more money that AMC and that Clearview’s Parsippany and Succasunna theaters get more than the shopping centers since those theaters are not near big malls and have better projection and customer service than AMC, which employs a mixture of old and young customers with hard to read accents. At least they added the AMC 16 tag to the entrance sign to the mall.
Just came back from seeing “No Country For Old Men”, the trailer was good, but the movie was not, especially the ending. These days, ever since the 1970’s, trailers give away the whole storyline, except the ending. Some of them are really good and don’t reveal anything at all, like “Cloverfield”. As for Radio City’s policy of showing trailers back when they showed movies, they probably did a better job than most theaters these days. Could you imagine if the Hall showed previews of upcoming events at the hall before the Xmas Spectacular? That would make a really long show!!! Also, it’s that time of year…is this year’s show better than that of years past, or is it the same old bore?
that sucks….my town lost its theater for nearly five years before getting a newer one…that is AMC’s rockway location. The original was two theaters, each with six screens and located in and out of the mall. It was closed during the summer 2002 box office and was relaunched in the fall of 2006 to compete against the improved Parsippany and Succasunna theaters that were ruling box office profits in Morris County. AMC I think is number 1, with Parsippany and Succasunna in second and third.
back when it was gc, the rewards program was called credits, and it let me get points and chances to win prizes; for the release of gladiator, an actual helmet used by russell crowe in the movie was offered as a prize in a sweepstakes. too bad i didn’t win. after amc bought gc, credits was replaced with moviewatcher and the chance of winning stuff was gone and in it was just getting points for free food and tickets. to this day, it still runs well even though it’s an amc now.
any news on when it will close? there was a post on that other wayne theater that is still open which mentions that the amc loews wayne would kill off the smaller theatres. only one, the valleyview twin, is gone, leaving the future of the quad in doubt.
travis reid was involved in managing this theater as well as other loews/sony/star/cineplex odeon places before amc merged the company into its umbrella. as mentioned in a post for the rockaway theater that was to be built as a loews before the takeover, this theater has recently been run down in the dumps as more people prefer clifton commons over wayne.
thanks. btw, attendance at the movies was down by double digits this past weekend from a year ago not only because of the increase in ticket price, but a lack of really good movies.
one word of warning if u try to c beowulf..the cashier will say it’s not in 3d. many people asked the theater if it will play this decent but not great movie in 3d. at least the presentation was good, the service great, and the preshow back to normal since my last visit. too bad the met opera wont be hitting here, but in parsippany, which i haven’t been to since i took a tour of the place with my coworkers from employment horizons, a nonprofit group located not too far from the theater.
Tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of AMC’s return to theaters. On that same weekend, there are quite a few interesting films worth watching, such as Beowulf (not in 3-D), Mr. Magorium, and Cholera. Maybe next year this theater will have the technology like the other theaters surrounding the area. The only bad thing about this theater is that it forced only one theater to close, the Newton Twin, and leave Sparta open in its place. I wasn’t there that weekend when the theater opened, but the next weekend I went I really liked it. What future plans for this theater remain to be seen. About the only thing that changed this year was the prices. Despite that, this theater is the closest near where I live right now and is my favorite theater.
how about the newton theater? It’s still there although there’s no word of it being knocked down. It’s the only theater in New Jersey I can think of that has the makings of an old cinema treasure. Despite becoming a twin theater, I hope they restore the theater to its single screen glory so that it can show bigger and better movies.
Look at what happened at the Metreon this past weekend. Some kid got fatally shot in the lobby outside the theater on a sunday night at 7 p.m. and the police were too late to stop the killer, just arrest him. Another popular target for criminals to go to are older multiplexes like the Loews/Sony/AMC in wayne as well as East Hanover. Things such as stolen posters, ripped seats, graffiti in the lobby, that sucks. It’s time for Homeland Security to impose some rules on the box office, besides just airplanes and shopping centers. Mr Bush, are you listening to this? Either him or the next president could improve security at our cinema treasures. This is another reason why fewer people choose going to a movie and renting it in the safety of their own home.
i agree with you. In the near future, when robots and alien lifeforms take over earth, these cinema treasures will become gathering places for creatures of all sizes and ages to live and prosper.
oh that sucks….as for next year’s movies I think Indiana Jones will play at this theater and so will the new Batman movie. The last time Batman and Indy faced off was in 1989. Indy played at the Ziegfeld I think, and then Batman played at the astor. Guess which movie won.
but we can’t see “The Grinch” (the first musical to go on strike) on stage, just on TV and in the movie and the book. Also, “Mary Poppins”, “Lion King”, and “Little Mermaid”. Those disney musicals aren’t as good as the movies, but Beauty and the Beast remains my favorite movie-to-musical.
When Beowulf opens, will it be shown in digital 3d alongside the Imax 3d and 35mm? I checked the advance listing and it only showed 35mm and IMAX 3D for the two screens.
I checked the listings and nothing is coming out at this theater between Friday and the week after. Why is that? It would be nice to see the theater show something like Beowulf in digital 3-d, since Beowulf is a major movie event. At least the Lincoln Square theater will make a lot of money on this one as they will show it in all three formats.
also consider the movie pirates out there. With the advent of Youtube and Bittorrent, millions of internet users can finally watch a movie days before or after it’s out. A good example of this is American Gangster, which a good copy was made from a screener dvd that was sold on the black market. Despite that, the movie is doing great at the box office and with Bee Movie make up for the rest of the box office crap that is out there in the plexes right now. As for prices in the theaters, prices for 3-D shows are something new to crow about. In the past, the price for a 3-d show was the same as a regular show. Now with the advent of digital 3-d, the price is even higher, which means higher grosses for movies that don’t do well in 2-d.
that’s a long life for the theater.
btw, has attendance at this theater increased from a year ago?

Too bad the AMC can’t afford the money to show beowulf in Rockaway. Maybe next year if the film’s a success.

it’s in missisippi.

beowulf was soso, but american gangster was great.

my bad…homeland security wouldn’t be allowed at the movies, just airports and shipyards where travel is a concern.

Since broadway’s on strike, theatergoers will have to go to offbroadway theaters, Radio City Music Hall, and the movies.
