This was a very mysterious and short-lived drive-in.

Here is a 1963 aerial photo of the location, courtesy of HistoricAerials.com.

You will notice the drive-in is not there in 1963, and by switching over to the 1970 aerial imagery, the location has already been developed into a shopping center.

Here is a 1965 aerial photo of the same location, courtesy of Earth Explorer and USGS, where you can now view the drive-in. It appears this drive-in opened sometime between 1963 and 1965, and was demolished sometime before 1970.

The official website link does not work. I don’t think this “drive-in” is operating any longer, if that is what you choose to call it. I question if this qualifies as a drive-in, since there were no permanent structures involved. The screen was a bed sheet stretched out between two poles. At best it was a temporary outdoor lawn movie. Calling this a drive-in theatre is an insult to real drive-ins.

NYozoner commented about South Expressway Drive-In 1 & 2 on Feb 3, 2011 at 11:43 am

The title of this listing should be “South Expressway Drive-In.” At the very least, the words “drive-in” should be mentioned in the title.

This listing should be combined with the listing for the Forest Park Drive-In, as these were the same drive-in at the same location.

@ Mike: Couple of suggestions. I bet the county or town historian would love to get their hands on your photos, and would gladly scan them for you, and let you keep the photos if you want, while giving you digital copies of their scans on a dvd.

Scanner/copiers are also pretty inexpensive if you’d like to purchase your own digital scanner.

NYozoner commented about Commerce Drive-In on Feb 2, 2011 at 4:00 pm

@Mike: Regarding the marquee title layout, the explanation is pure laziness and a void in professionalism. They switched films from one screen to another, and instead of rearranging the titles on the marquee, they just rearranged the screen numbers. Nauseating, but typical of a large chain (U/A) which didn’t care enough to provide experienced management or competent supervision.

@Chuck: Earth Explorer has quality aerial imagery available for 1955 and 1972. Both those years showed the drive-in as being on what is now N Park St & Old Bremen Rd.

50 years ago that might have meant 471 Linda Lane. Who knows?

Neither of those years (1955 and 1972) showed any other drive-ins, or residual hints of previous drive-in activity.
