This page has some nice photos of the marquee and screen tower. It was called the Richmond Drive-In in the early-to-mid-‘50s; look carefully at the screen tower and you can make out the old name. (have to credit John Peppers for those pics) http://www.driveins.org/va-sandston-airport.htm

There you’ll see a photo of what once was the marquee, and a bit of scandal/history re: the last several years of drive-in operation.
I believe it’s still run by the daughter of the original owner. Very nicely-kept place that does great business in the summer. You should see the restrooms though: two little cinderblock huts (they look like outhouses) with a toilet and sink per!
I think it’s still in the Dalke family, although they have sold or closed all their other theatres, including ones in Woodstock, Strasburg, New Market and other area towns.
Thing is, highway numbering often changes over decades. If you look at the old topo map that’s linked from the page, yeah, it WAS located off of Route 24. However, that section was bypassed years ago, and is now Route 131.
Ironically, there’s a brand-new drive-in planned for Moneta, in the southern part of the county near Smith Mountain Lake. I’ll put up a listing for it when it gets built.
Interesting picture here. A local artist painted a mural of Newport News landmarks on the wall of a school cafeteria, reproducing the images from some snapshot photos. One of these was the Anchor DI.
Here are a bunch of great photos, taken right before and right after the 2000 reopening:

Bad news. The owner retired and it closed after the 2008 season.
Here is a page with some more photos from 1998, including screen tower/apartment and snack bar:

The photographer had to stand on top of the motel next door’s dumpster to get this shot. Enjoy :–)
