After 2016 the supermarket is a Cooperative Food supermarket.
There’s a delightful article about the cinema in Badjer News (Jacksdale newssheet) http://www.jacksdale.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/71-badjer-news-Aug-2017.pdf
In 1944 J.A.Gamble (as J.A.Campbell) is listed as Managing Director of companies which owned all the Grantham cinemas, with the exception of the State Cinema, later the Granada.
The Theatre Royal was owned by John Arthur Gamble OBE (1877-1947), a playwright born in Norfolk. He was the father of Judith Mary Gamble (1916-2004), aka Judy Campbell, about whom the song ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ was written. Judy Campbell was the mother of Jane Mallory Birkin (1946-), who as Jane Birkin is an actress and singer, noted for her 1967 recording of ‘Je t'Aime …“.
From the Kinematograph Year Book; it was named ‘Parliament Picture Palace’ until 1933. In 1935 it was the ‘Regal’. From 1936 to 1942 it was the ‘News House’ and from 1944 it was the ‘News Theatre’. Despite its impressive frontage it was a small cinema with a 20ft proscenium, reduced to 16ft by 1945. As the Regal it had 550 seats. This was reduced to 300-303 seats from 1936.
By 2011, an apartment block had been built on the site, probably #67a.
Location on 1914 OS map. A new-build now occupies the site.
