All those managers programmed the wrong price at the same time. Must have been AMC’s new telepathy management brainwashing methods or some middle management creep blaming the guys in the field.
When companies merge theatres they have to prove they are competitive on a zone or sell a site. That does not stop them from building future theatres and assume control over an area or negotiating to keep one site over another when both are highlighted potential monopolies.
If The Dept. of Justice in every country did not monitor this we would have no independently owned theatres or distributors in the US and Canada would still be a two-chain nation.
Jane Russell did not attend the premier because her contract with RKO (and Hughes) was over and she condemned the film before it even opened for having “questionable” and “shocking' camera angles.
The “dance” was deleted from the New York run due to censor trouble and the New York Times said the 3-D film lacked depth.
Having recently seen it TCM, it was a crude, tacky, bad two hour musical all about Jane’s breasts. Since she towers over all the other women in the film, she comes across as a transvestite.
Since most major chains showed “ALICE IN WONDERLAND”, albeit on special terms, what this producer wants is not just studio control of every major theatres (they already have that) but rather studio control of every theatre in the world.
Good luck with that!
Did he ever think that if 20th Century-Fox, instead of Disney could control more theatres “ALICE” would have had a marginal opening and not been able to scoop up all those 3-D IMAX screens away from “AVATAR”?
Fastidious, attractive, young lady of social background wanted for theatre manager in 1937.

This is excellent news.
The first run of “Carnival In Flanders” was also the opening film when it became a cinema in 1936.
Let me try that again.

I doubt it, daphx. It was most likely the State Theatre in Ithica, New York.
I could find no record of a twin operation as that post suggested. Perhaps they confused it with the Rivoli.

Interesting. I didn’t know that about legit shows.
I don’t get the “curtain at 8:40” comment. Does anyone know why that term meant arthouse?
Just another chapter in the THX rip-off…
Suckers bought it then and they will be buy it now again…short term.
I disagree and think the 3-D fad has already passed and remains for kid films only.
Oh, Eric! Now you are just being another nostalgic old timer waxing melancholy for the old 42nd street.
It is now an underground parking lot.

“…it’s anyone’s guess as to why Fox didn’t book these (70mm) in the original May 21 batch.”
My guess: Fox wanted big front money for this release. As time passed the front guarantee was lowered.

It was supposed to be opened in the year 2000, but alas, theatre was demolished by then.

Who said bad films didn’t kill 3-D?
Don’t blame Disney for CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG or SHREK, they were not theirs.
Their only crimes are TARZAN and LITTLE MERMAID but that TARZAN was one sad lip-sinc mess.
