Resident’s of Manhattan do not seem to go to matinee’s. I usually go Saturday or Sunday afternoon for that reason. Don’t Have to put up with crowds.Try an evening show. The place is packed. The same with the Regal across the street. Afternoons are a ghost town.
The last time I was at the Lincoln Square to see ‘Lucy" i inquired about 15/70mm at the IMAX screen. I was told that “Interstellar” and “The Hobbit:The Battle of the Five Armies” will show actual prints.
Attended the 1:00 PM show of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ on Saturday.
The picture and sound were impeccable. It as great seeing a film with out presentation issues that I have experienced at the Lincoln Square lately. It was a shame seeing that there was only about 100 patrons at the showing.
The comments about being off the beaten path seems strange with the theater only a block from the subway and bus stops and on the cusp of the Broadway theater district.
Curious if Dolby ATMOS will be installed especially where the theater is used for most of the premiers held in NYC now. The premiere of the new Helen Mirren film is being held on Monday.
The trailers for ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Into the Woods’ looked spectacular on the Ziegfeld screen.
The only item missing was use of the curtains.
I was here a few weeks ago to see “Godzilla” in Theatre 1. Went there or the Dolby ATMOS. Just say they royally messed up the projection of the movie. The picture did not take up the screen with black borders on top, bottom & sides. Seems as though the switching back and forth between 3D to 2D the proper adjustments were not done. Once the film started I was told nothing could be done. We were given passes but now the Lincoln Square is not a sure bet on presentation and this was considered one of the premier theaters in NYC. AMC has ruined this theater for me.
It is getting harder in NYC to see a decent movie presentation.
Chelsea Cinemas are getting a makeover. New signs posted at the theater when I attended this weekend. I posted a photo. New seats, new inside box-office, a complete makeover. reserved seats. The theater has been needing this for a while.
The marque always had Cinema Center on the top with Cinema 1 and Cinema 2 underneath. If a film switched theaters they would change the switch the 1 & 2 on the marquee. When they added the additional 2 theaters the numbers would be switched inside.
I saw “Harold and Maude” in Cinema 1. It actually played 3 days. Sunday through Tuesday before “The Godfather” opened that Wednesday. That was still during the time when theaters booked select films Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday through Tuesday.
During the period when it was still Cinema 1 and 2, they had what was call Cinema Center Series when select foreign films would play for 2, 3, 4, or 5 days. Such as “Ulysses”, “Elvira Madigan”, “The Two of Us”, “The Bride Wore Black”. Films that would not be able to play for a full week. These series would run for 2 weeks 2 or 3 times a year.
Doesn’t the Digital IMAX print utilize the full screen when the games begin? I know the 15/70mm print version used the full screen at the Lincoln Square IMAX.
Just back from see “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” The IMAX Experience. 15/70mm print. When the games start the screen opened up to full height and remained 4:3 ratio for most the rest of the film. Definitely can tell the difference from when I saw “Gravity” in Digital IMAX. I checked with Guest Services and The Hobbit sequel will be in 15/70mm.
Disappointment. According to the person I talked with today on the phone The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be digital on the IMAX screen instead of 15/70mm. So holding off on booking tickets until after the film opens on Thursday and check again to make sure. If this is the case the only IMAX in the area showing the film in 17/70mm is the IMAX in the Palisades Mall in Nyack.
And Catching Fire has IMAX shot footage. Does not bode well for The Hobbit sequel.

Fantasia 2000 was filmed in IMAX so it had the traditional 1.43:1 ratio. The Lincoln Square IMAX is 97 feet wide so even with ‘Gravity’ not taking up the full width, the picture was still larger than either the Lincoln Square 1 or the Ziegfeld.
The sad day has happened sooner than I thought it would. Went to see ‘Gravity’ this afternoon and it was DLP. AMC has added Digital IMAX projectors at this location. The 15/70mm equipment is still in place. A chat with the management after the film stated that unless they wanted to show ‘Elysium’ to empty houses until ‘Catching Fire’ they had to add Digital. But the plans are to show ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘The Hobbit’ sequel on prints. I know something was up when the presentation was a mess though the previews with large gaps of times. I would assume with Digital they don’t need to employee a projectionist for those engagements. I should have assumed something was up when ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and the Metallica film were booked for one week. When I got to the Customer Service digital copies of bot films were sitting on the counter. LOL. BTW only about 2/3 of the screen was used. The picture for ‘Gravity’ was not as big as the letter boxed picture of ‘Elysium. I was told that they plan on replacing the Digital equipment with the new Laser Projection when it becomes available.
Reserved my seats today for Saturday. Got mu usual favorite seats. Love reserved seats. Wish more theaters in NYC offered the service. Looking forward to enjoying 15/70mm. It will be a sad day when this screen goes digital.
The Regal E-Walk on 42nd Street opened as a Loew’s. The RPX screen is Theater 13 and there is not much difference in screen size than Theater 12. Theaters 12 & 13 are the 2 largest in the complex and had the same number of seats (550 per) and large screens. Regal did put new leather seating in The RPX screen and a more elaborate sound system but the screen size looks the same. The one sheet in the lobby says that the RPX screen has Dolby Atmos but I have not been able to confirm that.

It isn’t unusual for City Cinemas to show next weeks show times until Thursday. And Jobs is at the Beekman starting today along with the wider release of The Spectacular Now according to Fandango. So either Fandango or the Beekman website is wrong.
It seems to me that IMAX is making the same mistake that Cinerama made when it switched from 3 camera to 70mm. With all the not IMAX systems now such as AMC ETX and Regal’s RPX. I will wait to see how the Laser system is and if it has as bright a picture as the 17/70 system.
I am just curious, I have not been able to find a link on line that IMAX is going to phase out 15/70mm film presentation. I was under the impression that IMAX theaters, or at least the ones ties to museums paid for their own prints.
Yes it is still IMAX Lite. The screen would need to be in excess of 70 feet tall and run 70/15 to be considered true IMAX. Check out the following article.

Bow Tie only programs the Ziegfeld. The theater was not part of the Clearview sale.

Doubt very much the Union Square would close. It is probably the only theater complex on the East side that does any significant business.
