The last movie I saw here was THE EMERALD FOREST in the summer of 1985. I think it may have closed shortly after that. I still remember it as a great discount theatre.
Very sad indeed Dansdriveintheater. This was a first run sixplex when it opened in December 1984 and I recall it was quite an event. It was Dutchess County NY’s first new multiplex, whereas the other 2-3-4 screen complexes were all subdivided existing theatres.
This 8-plex shut down on February 3rd, 2019 after being served a cease and desist order from The Town of Poughkeepsie. Heating problems were cited as the cause for the order. The theatre’s website has been shut down and the closure appears to be permanent this time.
There was a later MAS*H episode where Max Klinger was pretending he was in Toledo (another attempt at getting his cherished Section 8)and tells Colonel Potter at the end that the Rivoli Theatre was being torn down to make way for a three story high rise. I just saw the episode last week.
Some of the movies I got to see include KING KONG (1976), SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, AMERICAN HOT WAX, GREASE, STAR TREK (1979), THE WARRIORS, THE FOG, the brief 1980 SUPERMAN rerelease, THE FIRST DEADLY SIN, NEIGHBORS, STAR TREK II, GHOSTBUSTERS, THE COTTON CLUB, FLETCH, BACK TO THE FUTURE ROCKY IV (not my idea), GUNG HO!, STAR TREK IV. Another grand theatre that is still very much missed.
Regal Cinemas is shutting down this multiplex on August 31st. The owners of the Hudson Valley Mall report they are in discussions with another theatre chain to take over and upgrade the 12plex. The Hudson Valley Mall itself has faced numerous store closures and losing the cinema complex could well be a death blow.
I remember the 9G alternating between X-rated fare and 2nd run commercial movies until the late 1970s when it went mostly 1st run. The last season it was open was 1985 and is indeed demolished.
I remember seeing a number of AIP releases during my 1970s childhood. FOOD OF THE GODS, THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVES DOWN THE LANE and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR as well as a few Universal movies in the 1980s.
For much of my youth this was a porno theatre that started showing THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW from the late 1970s thru the mid 1980s. I saw my first XXX movie “DIRTY BLONDES” here in 1983. Around 1984-1985 it was converted to a second run house showing commercial Hollywood movies. I seem to remember the place closing for good in the mid 1980s.
Does anybody recall that Loews announced plans to triplex the Astor Plaza in the wake of the closing of the original Loews State in early 1987? I seem to remember that Loews' lease prohibited multiplexing the theatre, thankfully.
I remember seeing a double feature of MEATBALLS and FOUL PLAY at the Walker one summer night in 1979. The house was packed and the laughter shook the walls. One of my fondest movie memories.
Remember seeing FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE, THE JERK, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE BLUES BROTHERS, ROCKY III among others when it was the RKO Cinerama Twin. Saw SUDDEN IMPACT here as the RKO Warner along with GREMLINS and ALIENS, both in 70MM.

Thank you ridethechain.
Does anyone have any idea why the Rivoli’s name was changed to the United Artists Twin in 1984?

Has this theatre reopened?
1941 opened at the Duffield on December 14th, 1979
Opened at The Rivoli on December 14th, 1979

Does anyone know why the name of the theatre was changed? The name United Artists Twin was just so generic.

Was this theatre later renamed the Main Street Theatre and continue to play 2nd run movies into the 1980s?

The Pickwick is reported to have closed sometime in October 1982.

I still can’t believe saw SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT here. That had to be the biggest WTH booking in RCMH history.
Looks like this was a grand theatre. It should have been left as it was.

Saw FULL METAL JACKET here during opening weekend in June 1987. Theatre was sold out practically the entire weekend.
I think 1983 was the last year this drive-in was open.

Forum was a better name for this theatre than Movieland. Just an opinion. I saw ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ here when it was the Forum.
