News About This Theater
- Feb 12, 2014 — Waynesville movie theater seeks help creating historical timeline
- Sep 6, 2005 — Strand Theater to Reopen
The Strand Theatre opened in 1942 as a movie house seating 412. It remained in operation until the late-1970’s. In 1984 it got a facelift and became the home to the Haywood Arts Repertory Theatre. It remained their home until 1993 when code violations forced them to vacate the rented facility.
The theatre was boarded up tight, but still stood awaiting its fate. The vertical which had been painted a light blue still says “Theatre” down each side and the marquee which had been painted a bright pink still says in broad letters “Strand” on each side.
It was renovated and reopened in 2013. It had closed by 2021 and is in retail use as as an ice cream store.

Does anyone know the current status of this theater? Is there an owner? I am interested… Drove by address -saw no marquis…surely it’s not gone? Please post if you know anything. looks like it was being renovated in 2007 according to previous posts.
Thanks!

Was in Waynesville for a friend’s wedding November 2021 & as I drove through main street the marquee for The Strand immediately stuck out. Unfortunately, it looks like it is no longer a theater and is now an ice cream shop, so this may need to be updated (unfortunately it was closed so I couldn’t go inside). Here is a pic I took.
