The Northfield Cinemas opened its doors on Christmas Eve 1969 with “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” in Screen 1 and “The Reivers” in Screen 2.
Toby is 100% correct on its early ownership, because in its early years, the Northfield was a Cinemette theater for several years, and then it became independently-operated afterward. The Northfield Cinema closed for the final time in May 1999 due to the popularity over the nearby Cinemark as well as the Northfield Cinema’s building being worn-out.

Didn’t the guy running the Mercury later take over the Southgate Cinema from GCC? I knew what that guys name was, but right now can’t think of it.
The Northfield Plaza cinema, I think, was originally affilated with a Pittsburgh-based chain called “Cinemette”, which I think was absorbed into what is now Carmike Cinemas. However, the Cinemette ownership only lasted a few years, and the Northfield Plaza eventually became independent. Also, the owner of the Northfield Plaza took over the Mercury Theatre from General Cinema briefly before that theatre closed. For years, the Northfield Plaza had shown sub-run films for discounted admission. The Northfield Plaza closed shortly after Cinemark opened its 16-plex in nearby Macedonia.
This was built as a 2-screen cinema, and during the 70s was listed in the paper as the Northfield Plaza I & II – it was not affiliated with any of the major chains, always appeared to be independent.
