Is there a photo of the restored marquee?
Wow, that is a very big and tall marquee!! How did they the letters and numbers on and off that tall marquee? Are those big square holes on the tall post part of the marquee, windows?
The Kilgore held its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 12, 1950, based on extensive coverage in the Kilgore News Herald. The opening program was “It’s a Great Feeling” with Doris Day, plus a color cartoon and a fireworks display between showings. “After the fireworks show, (owner) Liggett was host to a number of press, radio and theater folks at a chicken barbecue at the Crim residence.”
It appears from the latest Google maps that the marquee has been saved and updated.
Approx. address for this drive-in was 3250 South Henderson Boulevard.
The Kilgore ISD has recently purchased this tract of land on which to build schools. It is their intent to update and incorporate the marquee into modern use.
