The Martin Theatre was built as a single screen theatre and opened June 24, 1971 with John Wayne in “Big Jake”. On December 17, 1982 it was converted into a twin cinema.

The Martin, or as it was later known The Martin Twin, was part of the old Kingsport Mall. You entered the theatre from inside the mall. The entire mall structure was demolished a couple of years ago, and a new shopping complex, sans theatre, stands in the former location.

This theater had the most comfortable plush red pleather rocker seats. I loved this place as a kid and into my early adulthood. I saw Return of the Jedi here during its original release. I hated to see it go.

The June 24, 1971, issue of the Kingsport News said that the new Martin Theatre would open that night.

Became the Martin Twin on December 17th, 1982. Another ad posted.
