The Regency Cinema opened in San Rafael on October 21, 1983. It was one of the best places to see movies in Marin County. Screen #1 was in a large auditorium, and is wide enough for 70MM movies. Theaters #2, #5, and #6 are quite large and comfortable also. Theaters #3 and #4 were smaller. For its first six years of operation, it was the only place to catch a daily matinee in Marin, and was always playing to sellout crowds.
In 2001 it was nicely refurbished by Century Theatres, and was later sold to Cinemark. For the most part they played more “upscale” movies and were not quite as busy as they used to be. It was closed on November 27, 2023.

This opened (or first listings in the SFC) on October 21st, 1983. First ad posted.
This theatre opened in 1983 with an excellent HPS-4000 sound system installed in auditorium 1.
Unfortunately due to political reasons it was removed in favor of an inferior system sometime around 1993-1994.
Saw Batman in 70 MM in the summer of 1989 and Dances with wolves in Dolby SR in December of 1990 in auditorium 1. Truly memorable.
Terminator 2 played in auditorium 1 in Cinema Digital Sound (CDS) through the digital ready HPS-4000 sound system and sound was absolutely breathtaking.
Shame on the executive at Pacific for ordering the removal of the HPS-4000 system.
