Plaza 3 Cinema

From what I found on the Plaza Cinema, it opened in 1971 as a single screen and was owned by L & M Amusement Co. In the late-1980’s it was taken over by Kerasotes Theatres and was twinned. Sometime in the early-1990’s another screen was added making it a triplex. From what I found it is the only theatre in Iowa that was operated by Kerasotes.

The independent Eisentraut Theatres chain took over in December 2010. It was closed on March 16, 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. It was announced in June 2020 that the theatre would be permanently closed.

This theater was acquired by AMC when it bought most of Kerasotes theaters, and they renamed it the the AMC Plaza 3. AMC will be closing it as of November 28, 2010: View link

According to the article, this cinema originally opened as a single-screen in the late 1960s.

There’s an embedded video tour of the place (from YouTube) on Eisentraut Theaters' website. It’s not easy to see why AMC decided this place wasn’t in their model: it’s the type of theatre they abandoned running in the 80’s even though it probably still does well (although the margins aren’t nearly what they’d be at a 24-plex). Despite the fact the owner of the chain has expressed some bizarre and controversial views on this site a few years ago – I wish the operation well for the sake of the community.

The August 24, 1970, issue of Boxoffice said that that the L & M Circuit was planning three new theaters in Iowa, all to be located in shopping centers that were being developed by Matthew Buckshaum.

The 400-seat, single screen Plaza Cinema in Keokuk’s Keosippi Plaza Shopping Center (now River City Mall) was to be located at the south end of the enclosed mall, adjacent to the entrance of a Montgomery Ward department store (now a Dollar General store.) A Christmas Day opening was planned.
