The 700-seat Roxy Theatre was an African-American theatre which opened on December 15, 1949 with Lon McCallister in “The Big Cat”. It was closed by the mid-1980’s. Renovations began on the derelict building in 2008, and in 2011, the almost roof-less building was being used periodically for special events & live music performances. A roof now covers the stage, but otherwise, it is an open-air venue. It hoped in the future to include movies as part of the programming.

I would like to share that I purchased the New Roxy theater in June of 2008 and have started renovations. The interior is completely gutted and there is no roof. Sadly all that remains are essentially 4 brick walls, a masonary floor and stage and the marquee. No screen or film equipment remains.
My intent is to utilize the space as an ‘open air’ venue for live music, films or other entertainment. Eventually working towards covering the stage area. This is a very long term project. Anyone wanting to follow out progress can do so at www.myspace.com/newroxy

We are currently renovating the space and are open 2-3 times a year for special events. Usually live music. The theater no longer has a full roof and is utilized as an ‘open air’ venue. Robin Colonas – Owner www.newroxyclarksdale.com facebook.com/newroxy
The Roxy Theatre originally opened as a colored-only theater. The Roxy opened its doors on December 15, 1949 with “The Big Cat” along with a newsreel, a serial, and a comedy reel, featuring an original capacity of 700 seats, and was first operated by A.N. Rossie. The structure measures 40x125ft long and its original projection equipment features Simplex projection with a Four-Star sound system.
