Colonial Theater schedule for the week of March 29, 1920

This theater is still standing and is located near the Milford train station on River Street. It looks like a theater from the outside and with the pilasters on the sides. It seems pretty small, maybe 500 seats. The architecture feels like a general store in a maritime way (since it’s near the port). There are offices on the ground floor and medical offices in back. I went inside the other day and upstairs and there’s drop-ceilings in place but it’s completely altered.

The original Colonial (/theaters/18934/) is located on the beach in Milford on Broadway, opened in 1920. It was first known as the Strand and when this Colonial in Milford Center closed, the Strand became the Colonial.

According to the Milford/Orange City Directory, this is in the 1913 directory as the Colonial on 41 River Street. The next directory, 1924 doesn’t list it.

It was built in 1900.

The address you have for this building is 41 River St., but the building you link to in the photo is at 49-51 River St.

Yeah, I realized I made that mistake. I went by the City Directory but obviously today it’s different. In the directories, they have a tendency to change year to year, even though it’s the same spot.

The photos on the assessor’s site must be old. I photographed this theatre today and the front has been repainted.
