The State Theatre opened in 1936 with 500 seats. In August 2008 it was closed and for sale. By 2014 it had fallen into a state of disrepair and was purchased by Alley A Realty a family business who specialise in historic preservation and redevelopment. On July 30, 2016 a relighting ceremony of the marquee & sign was held, drawing a huge crowds of onlookers. In October 2019 renovations are well under way and it reopened in 2020 as Ely’s Historic State Theater with a reduced seating capacity of 300. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The State Theatre building itself measures 110x50ft and originally housed 630 seats when it first opened as a single-screener on October 11, 1936 with Francis Lederer in “My American Wife” (unknown if extras added). Some original features include a 19ft silver screen with sound boxes located on a 14ft curved stage, a 32x10ft foyer, and RCA Photophone sound.
