The Elco Theatre is the second movie house after the nearby Ely Opera House, launching on April 17, 1909 by the Northern Amusement Company located inside the Miller building.

After closing for a while during the early-1930’s, manager Dave Rundquist alongside his Grand Theatre Company of Minneapolis renovated the former Elco house and reopened the theater as the Grand Theatre on June 20, 1935 with Dick Powell in “Gold Diggers of 1935” along with the Vitaphone Varieties short “Show Kids”.

This was unfortunately short-lived, and the Grand Theatre shuttered after a year of a reboot on September 3, 1936, when Rundquist went back to Minneapolis where he was employed at another business.
