Opened as the Parkside Theatre on December 30, 1921 it was designed by the owner Michael C. Engelmeyer and architect Arthur Towne. It was not a great success and had two owners in the first two years. It was rebuilt in 1930, reopening on October 6, 1930.
Several more independent operators took over the building over the years and in December 1951 it became the Cameo Art Theatre, which screened foreign and some American films. It became the New Cameo Art Theatre on October 28, 1958, opening with “Birth of a Nation”, but this wasn’t successful either and it soon closed in early-1959.
