The Gil Theatre was located on S. Saint Antoine Street at Cameron Street. It was an African-American theatre which had opened on May 25, 1950 with William Holden in “Streets of Larado”. It was closed on April 23, 1967 and was put up ‘For Sale’. It has since been demolished.

When I was a boy, the Gil was strictly an African American theater.

The Gil theatre opened on May 25th, 1950 as “The South’s Finest Colored Theatre” and closed on April 23rd, 1967. At one time it was operated by Connett theatres. Grand opening ad posted.
