Hollywood Theater

The Hollywood Theater was opened May 8, 1940 with Vivian Blaine in “If I’m Lucky”. In 1955 it became an African-American theatre. In the 1970’s it reverted back to be a segregated theatre. It was closed in 1977 with Richard Pryor in “Silver Streak” & Robert Hooks in “Trouble Man”.

There was a small photo of the recently opened Hollywood in Boxoffice, April 1948. It was noted that this was a segregated theater.

The Hollywood Theatre opened on May 8th, 1940. Grand opening ad posted.

1957… it was still open in 1977! It became an African American theater in 1955 and returned to segregated operation running blaxploitation films into the 1970s. Its star appears to have vanished on July 5, 1977 following a dollar night double feature of Richard Pryor in “Silver Streak” and Robert Hooks in “Trouble Man.”
