Located adjacent to the Kings Head Hotel, the Lyric Picture Playhouse opened on 17th October 1912. In 1929, it was re-named New Lyric Cinema and was presenting films and variety shows. There were two dressing rooms for artistes. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system.
It was re-named New Star Cinema in 1934, but this was short lived as it was closed in 1935. By 1937 it had reopened as the Star Cinema, operated by the Ralph Specterman chain. It had closed by 1944. The building was later demolished and a HSBC Bank stands on the site in 2018.
