4DX seats were added on 9th December 2016, London’s first cinema to receive them.
Currently undergoing a major refurbishment, still ongoing as of February 2017 but looking brilliantly modern already!
Chapman Taylor were the architects for the refurbishment including the 4DX auditorium.
My first visit here since its refurb, and my first experience of 4DX.
Foyer is quite dazzling with its shiny floor and myriad of LED displays, and after I left my film it was really bustling with people including the large Starbucks on the ground floor. The upper floor with its strangely hidden away and soulless bar and access to the old VIP box seating has been closed off.
4DX effects were good fun and certainly suit certain films (Geostorm would have been unbearable awful without them). The screen in this auditorium is large, curved and wall to wall. Picture and 3D was fine during the trailers however once the film started and the screen zoomed to scope, focus was soft, contrast was poor and there was a fair bit of ghosting. Also the very top corners of the screen had a shadow cast on them by the 4DX equipment trusses. Sound was good enough – dialogue from the centre channel sounded harsh during adverts but seemed to improve once the film started.
An attendant sits in the screen throughout the screening, seemingly for safety purposes only.
Plans within the premises licence – p12-14.
The scan quality is extremely poor.
Zappomatic: Which auditorium is the 4DX screen?
Shame that the picture/sound quality you describe is medicore. In particular 4DX would seem to me to be most effective combined with high quality sound including plenty of headroom, particularly for the LFE sub-bass) channel.
Doesn’t sound very promising for the LSQ conversion… ridiculous that operators spend a fortune on flashy foyers and systems like 4DX but the projection/sound, i.e. the most important aspect of all, isn’t properly calibrated (or possibly sufficiently well specified.) But then that’s the way it always has been…
4DX is screen 9 – on the plans it’s the one where all the seats are clustered in fours.
D'oh! Of course it’s the one where the seats are in units of fours…
Using Google Maps to get the cinema dimensions, that gives an estimated screen width of 30ft.
I see the seats are offset so that there is in fact a centrally positioned seat in each rows.
There appears to be two disabled bays, which I assume means they get a 4DX “lite” experience—no 4DX seat but the “environmental” FX only!
Toilets are under the rear of the auditorium, so they can pump in smells as needed… ;–)
Actually, there is a room behind the auditorium, to the right of the booth, which I assume contains the 4DX gear.
Reestimating the screen width from the above linked licensing plans, the 4DX screen is as much as 50ft. wide.
ScreenX has been added to Cineworld Wandsworth, open as of the 14th December 2018.
Grand opening ad posted.
