The cinemas at Southwyck Mall in south Toledo rose and fell along with the fortunes of the mall itself. AMC opened its first seven-plex at Southwyck, inside the mall, when it opened on August 5, 1972 as the AMC Southwyck 7 Theatres. An eighth screen was added in April 1976.
Later, AMC opened on October 4, 1985 a three-screen addition, with a separate exterior entrance it was named Southwyck Art Cinemas, originally to feature art and independent films. In 1996, as the mall began to decline, AMC closed the interior, eight-screen section on September 22, 1996 and National Amusements took over the three-screen section with the exterior entrance, closing it on June 12, 2001.
The entire mall closed in 2008 and was demolished in 2009.

THE THREE SCREEN ADDITION OUTSIDE THE MALL WAS
AKA:
SOUTHWYCK 9-10-11
SOUTHWYCK 3
Was this the first 7-plex in the world?
More info or photos?
I do not know if it was the first seven-plex in the world, but it appears to have definitely been the first for AMC. The three exterior theaters also appear to have been at least briefly known as the Southwyck Art Cinemas.
The Toledo Blade was so anxious for the Southwyck Art Cinemas to succeed that it published this editorial urging public support for the house in its issue of May 15, 1998. The editorial said that the Art Cinemas had opened “…about four months ago,” so the house began operating with the art film policy around the beginning of 1998.
The first ever seven-screener in all of Ohio was the Southwyck 7 Theatres, although it was not the first ever in the United States. This statewide record-breaking house opened its doors on August 5, 1972 by AMC, and an eighth screen was added nearly four years later in April 1976. AMC would then open three more screens with a separate exterior entrance on October 4, 1985.
The main eight screens closed on September 22, 1996, while the remaining three screens closed on June 12, 2001.
