The Belle Theatre in Belleville, Ontario was built by a Mr. McCarthy who had another theatre in Belleville, named after him, the McCarthy Theatre. In the late 20’s, the Belle was doing very well so Famous Players tried to get Mr. McCarthy to become a partner of theirs and split the profits in equal shares!! Mr. McCarthy refused this and sold this theatre to Famous Players. I believe the McCarthy became an early unit of Twentieth Century Theatres (a Famous Players partner)!!

I was under the impression that the Belle/McCarthy closed in approximately 1960 and for many years was the “Stephen Licence” hobby/bike shop. This building was altered very little as the owner thought it might return to theatre use someday, which of course it has, as the “Empire Theatre”, showing movies and live music/stage acts.

I think the Belle and the McCarthy are separate theaters, but I could be wrong. The McCarthy last operated as an Odeon before closing on May 6, 1961 because of the McCarthy being sold to Famous Players, but the new owners didn’t announce anything on reopening.
