Opened as City Cinema Twin on 25th December 1973 on screen 1 with “Magnum force” and on screen 2 with “The Poseidon Adventure”.
Opened on 25th June 1947 with “It happened tomorrow”.
there was a row of houses down left side back in the 70’s .That might be the Theater Road another poster mentioned Had friends that lived there in 71. we would turn up speakers in front row then set outside and watch the movies. actually paid and went and saw Midnight Cowboy there
This theater closed in Spring, 1989. I know this because I arrived in VA in the Summer of 1989 and was PISSED that this business closed right before I got there. The big screen and abandoned ticket center stood for years after the closure. Before the Wal Mart was built, there were some carnivals and other events in the empty parking lot. Not sure exactly when the old structures finally fell, but it was definitely down by 2000.
The grand opening ad for Cinema City says that it was built on the site of the old York Drive-In which suggests to me that the drive-in was already in existence when Cinema City opened, but it just was not operating for the season.
The Cinema City twin cinema walk-in opened on December 25th, 1973 and the drive-in opened in Spring, 1974.
I just posted a photo of the Opening Ad dated June 25, 1947
This one was unique, as it was a traditional twin co-located with the drive-in. It closed in the mid-1990s – I think it was around the time that the Regal down the street in Kiln Creek opened. As another poster mentions, the property was redeveloped and is now a Super Wal-mart.
Surprise, surprise! It is now a Walmart! Approx. address was 2459 George Washington Memorial Hwy. (Route 17). Yorktown, VA.
Google Earth shows a Theatre Road just off of VA 17. No real evidence of any drive-in ramps, but a couple of spots that might have been of enough size to house a drive-in.
I have it at 300 cars in the 1956 motion picture almanac.Sam Ashman the owner in 1956.
