Situated in the town of Bugibba, in the north of the main island of Malta, it is believed the Empire Cinema opened circa 2002.
There is a large ground floor bar. The auditoriums are on the upper floors. Four of these (Screen 1:200 seats; Screen 2:250 seats; Screen 3:200 seats and Screen 4:250 seats) are in the front of the building, while Screens 5, 6 & 7 (each with 100 seats) are in the rear. These latter three identical auditoriums are situated one on top of the other.
I first encountered the Empire Cinema in May 2012, during a visit to Malta by the British based Cinema Theatre Association. On that occasion a brief ‘photo stop’ was our only view of the cinema. However, during a holiday in February 2018 I was able to make a more comprehensive visit, and, on 9th February I saw a screening of “The Commutor” starring Liam Neeson, in Screen 7. This is one of the three smallest auditoriums, but as MovieGeek2013 says “They are a decent size, with nicely raked seating and good sized screens”. And yes! the island’s cinemas still persist with the infamous intermissions during the course of a movie. During “The Commutor” this was (seemingly rather arbitrarily) inserted during a particularly tense scene! The Empire Cinema was closed in February 2022.

Visited this cinema several times when on holiday in Malta. It is a nice cinema with decent size screens. 4 out of the 7 screens have digital DLP projection with 3D. They have no commercials before each film, just trailers. They also still have an intermission during most films.
