News About This Theater

The Colored Theatre was opened in 1921 by E.A. Martin, an African American. It served primarily the African-American population of the Lincolnville area of St. Augustine. In 1949 it was renamed Rex Theatre and from August 9, 1950 it became the Carver Theatre. It became the Community Theater on March 30, 1951 and did not operate on Sundays.

The theater has been closed and roofless for many years; only the exterior walls and the projection booth remain. In 2012, a St. Augustine couple announced plans to convert the space into an open-air airdome type dine-and-view cinema.
