I also believe it’s because the theater is intended to be an “art house” theater, at least partially. But you raise a valid point, JAlex. Highly ironic…also, this will be on the property where Noah’s Ark used to be, I believe. We’ll see if this catches on.

A bit of irony that the planned new theatre will have 8 screens. Eight screens was “obsolete” in 2000 when the Regency Square closed. Must be a different spokesperson.

After nearly a decade and a half, St Charles County will have an AMC theater again, in the fall of 2014.

My favorite memory of the Regency is June 24, 1989. I saw the first showing of the day of Batman, and upon exiting, found two tickets for a late matinee on the ground, so I saw the same movie twice in one day.

The last movie I saw there before it closed was Mystery Men.

I also found that Predator 2 opened at the Regency but it was likely gone by Christmas.

Let’s see: I saw Edward Scissorhands, Misery, Kindergarten Cop, Look Who’s Talking Too, and…can’t remember the other one…

Some of the movies that were showing at the Regency during Christmas 1990: The Russia House, Kindergarten Cop, Look Who’s Talking Too, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands, Misery, Three Men and a Little Lady.

OK, one more thing: Had Regency Square Shopping Center been around in the 70s, I’m certain General Cinema would have put a theater there. That shopping center is the exactly the type of location GCC would have wanted and I’m certain they would have put at least 6 screens in it to compete with Cinema 4 Center. Just speculation on my part, but hey, it’s fun!

I went to this theater a lot, especially during my last two years in St. Louis (1989-1991) before I moved to Southern California. I lived in an apartment complex in St. Charles not far from this theater. In fact, during Christmas week of 1990, I had the whole week off from work, so I went to a movie every day of that week at the Regency Square…even driving through snow!! CSW is correct: a 24 Hour Fitness now occupies the building. It was a VERY popular theater for its entire existence. Too bad it closed.

There are some pictures of the theater on its page at CinemaTour. According to the information there, a fitness center now occupies the site.

Operated from 11/26/86 to 2/6/2000. AMC spokesperson said at time of closure: “8 screens alone makes it obsolete.”
