Located in Hyde, Cheshire, today part of Greater Manchester, at the corner of Clarendon Street and New Beech Street. The Star Picture House was opened prior to 1914. All seating was on a single floor. By the 1920’s it had been re-named Scala Picture House.
Around 1929 a Picturetone sound system was installed, which was later replaced by a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system. In the early-1950’s it was re-named Astoria Cinema and a British Acoustic(BA) sound system was installed. Equipped for CinemaScope in the mid-1950’s, although the screen size was rather small.
The Astoria Cinema was closed in the early-1960’s and was converted into a bingo club, which closed on 22nd February 2009. The building remains unused in 2014.
