Public Hall

Located in Carlisle, Cumbria. The Public Hall was built as a chapel & schoolroom in the 1820’s. It was converted into a cinema known as the Public Hall in 1906. It was operated by Sydney Bacon Pictures Ltd.

Seating was provided on a slightly raked floor, with a small balcony at the rear which was supported by pillars. The proscenium was 21 feet wide. By 1932 it had been equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

In November 1935 it was taken over by the Union Cinema chain. In October 1937 they were taken over by the Associated British Cinema(ABC) chain.

ABC closed the Public Hall on 17th November 1956, never having had CinemaScope installed. It has since been in retail use.

I have looked at the programmes for this cinema over it’s last few months, and as far as I can see, does not seem to have shown any cinemascope pictures, so had probably not been so equipped. It closed on 17th November 1956.
