The Empire Hall(also called Empire Pictures & Empire Theatre) was built and opened in 1910, by the owners of the next-door Freemasons Hotel. The hall was also used as a skating rink(ice or roller?). Film screenings ceased in the late-1950’s.
After being empty for many years, it was used as a furniture showroom(name unknown), an extension of the hotel lounge, and a showroom for electrical goods store Atkins Carlyle. The Empire Hall was demolished in 1990 to make way for the hotel’s(then renamed Junction Hotel, now called Eastern Hotel) beer garden and car park.
