Moonlight Drive-In

The first auto theatre to open in Chillicothe was the Moonlight Auto Theatre. It opened on April 8, 1948, screening the 1947 western “Red Stallion” with Robert Paige, Noreen Nash and Ted Donaldson. It was opened by Barton Cook and Ed Payne. It featured a 30ft x 40ft screen, two Century movie projectors and seating for 100 walk-in patrons. In 1950 it was operated by Lou Wetzel. Around 1950 it was taken back by Barton Cook and Ed Payne. In 1951 Jack Needham joined them in operating the theatre which was renamed Moonlight Drive-In. In 1959, Payne dissolved his partnership with Barton and built the Fiesta Drive-In.

The Moonlight Drive-In closed at the end of the 1964 season. The drive-in was demolished and the road frontage is now commercial business, while the parking field is just an empty lot.
