In the town of Largs, on the west coast of Scotland, the church of the United Session Synod was erected in 1826. Later, it became a public hall, with luminaries such as Mrs Pankhurst, the Suffragette leader, using it as a speaking platform.
Around 1913 it was converted into a cinema, The Picture House. According to the 1931 Kinematograph Year Book (KYB), it was owned by Largs Picture House Company Ltd., offering “Pictures and Variety”, with a 33ft wide proscenium, a 46ft deep stage, three dressing rooms, a cafĂ© and dance hall. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.
The 1940 KYB lists it as the Picture House, but, by the 1944 edition, the cinema has been renamed the George Cinema following a takeover by George Palmer when it became part of his Associated G.P. Cinemas chain. .
The George Cinema was still open in 1954, but had closed by 1963. By the time I visited, in June 2003, the building was occupied by Narducci Antiques, which continues to date (December 2015).
