In the west Devon town of Braunton, the Plaza Cinema opened on 10th January 1932 with 492 seats, all on a single floor.
In the 1940 Kinematograph Year Book, the owner is listed as George A Drake. At that time, the cinema had 492 seats, and the proscenium was 25ft wide.
On 8th January 1945 the cinema was acquired by Messrs R. and R. J. Long.
By the 1953 KYB the seating had been reduced to 388.
The Plaza Cinema closed on 12th September 1964 with “The Crimson Pirate”. It became a bingo club. Most of the auditorium has subsequently been demolished, but part of it, and the attractive frontage, remains and, from the road, the cinema looks completely intact. The frontage is home to John Patt’s Fruit Shop.
