News About This Theater

Cinema Theatre

This theater was originally to be called the Crest Theatre when it was being built, but by the time the theater opened on June 8, 1966 it was simply called the Cinema Theatre. The Missouri Governor at that time was Warren Hernes who spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony followed by the opening feature movie “The Glass Bottom Boat” starring Doris Day.

Its opening was heralded with a modern concession area and the latest in motion picture projection. It had climate controlled heating and cooling with plush American Recliner seats. The box office was located in the lobby of the theater.

This theatre was part of the Commonwealth Theatre chain and was the last big auditorium in Columbia, Missouri. It was closed by Hollywood Theaters on November 30, 1998 screening “American History X” starring Edward Norton.

This theater sat within feet of the Broadway Drive-In Theater, which was originally located just to the right of the Cinema Building. A supermarket is located there now.
