Located in Du Laoghaire, south of Dublin. The Pavilion Cinema was located in the Pavilion which was built on the site of the original one which opened 22nd June 1903 and began screening films as the Pavilion Gardens Cinema in 1911 and burned down in November 1915. The building opened on 7th July 1917 incorporating a cinema and dance-hall behind. Owing to the growing demand in the 1930’s it was decided to create something more elaborate, and in 1939 the building was reconstructed with a concrete shell to replace the wooden structure and the cinema was enlarged to accommodate 1,320 people. However this too suffered a fire in November 1940 but reopened the following year on 12th April 1941 with Cesar Romero in “Lucky Cisco Kid”.
Originally run by the Pavilion Gardens company, it passed from Associated Picture Houses to Odeon (Ireland) in the late-1940’s. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE), later GB-Kalee, sound system. Most of the 1960’s seemed to consist mainly of popular films with the rest of the time devoted to live shows. It screened its last film in June 1974: the comedy “No Sex Please: We’re British” starring Ronnie Corbett & Beryl Reid. It was bought by the council and hosted a Labour Party conference a year later. It reopened for other uses such as concerts, notably The Dubliners, before eventually closing in 1984.
It was later demolished and the land used as a car park before the current building on the site, commercial units with the Pavilion Theatre on top, was built in 2000.
