Jasper Theatre

Albert Russell and J.W. Cross opened the Colonial Theatre in downtown Jasper on the Southeast corner of the Square on January 23, 1915 likely on a 20-year leasing agreement. It replaced Seaman Brothers store. The projection booth used Powers projectors and two fire exits were provided. It was the town’s second movie theatre.

In 1935, the theatre was updated and renamed the Jasper Theatre relaunching on November 28, 1935 with George Burns & Gracie Allen in “The Big Broadcast of 1936”. By 1943 it was operated byParamount pictures Inc. through their subsidiary Wilby-Kincy. The theatre ran until a new Jasper Theatre was built at 19th Street and 3rd Avenue in 1950 by Alabama Theatres Inc. Circuit. The New Jasper Theatre opened on October 18, 1950 with the old Jasper Theatre closing the previous night.

The former theatre was purchased by the First National Bank of Jasper in November of 1950.
