Jackson Park Cinema

The Jackson Park Shopping Center was announced in 1968 and opened theatre-less in late-1971 anchored by a W.T. Grant Department Store and a Hook’s Drug Store. Expansion in 1972 to the center included groundbreaking on August 27, 1972 of a new Jerry Lewis franchised and fully automated 350-seat single-screen cinema launched by local businessmen under the name JBH Enterprises.

Seymour Mayor Christopher Moritz was at the Open House launch of the Jerry Lewis Cinema on February 27, 1973. The next night it had its grand opening with the musical film “1776” starring William Daniels. But the Jerry Lewis Cinema concept and its parent company, Network Cinema Corp., was hurtling toward bankruptcy. On August 1, 1973, the Jerry Lewis signage was removed and the theatre was renamed the Jackson Park Cinema.

It was twinned in late-December 1990. But the theatre was under pressure as an 8-screen theatre launched in 1999 and a 12-screen facility was announced in 2000. The Jackson Park Cinema bowed out gracefully on August 2, 2000 with a charity screening of “Crocodile Dundee” starring Paul Hogan. The theatre sat unused for two years and was converted for other retail purposes in 2002 by a realtor.
