‘Talkies’ arrived in Katoomba October 1929 but smaller Blue Mountain towns like Hazelbrook continued showing ‘Silents’ for several years - to ever decreasing audiences. Eventually Sydney real estate agent Reginald Thornton Golby invested in two M.P.S. 35mm portable sound projectors for use at the Hazelbrook Scouts’ Hall, with the first showing Saturday 21st October 1933. Over the next five years he conducted a circuit of cinemas, with Hazelbrook usually – but not always – showing the same night as nearby Lawson, using the same film print ‘switched’ between venues.
