On October 20, 1988 the manager of Cinema World agreed to cut short the engagement of “The Last Temptation of Christ” from four weeks to two weeks because of objections and threats of boycotts by religious leaders who thought the portrayal of Christ was offensive.
This theater actually has 2 screens and not 4. It opened in 1971 and closed in 1997. The theater actually went by the name Eastway I-II but was locally known as Cinema World to not be confused with the Eastway Plaza theater. It was owned originally by Cinemette Corporation of America from 1971-1988 when it was taken over by Cinema World from 1988-1994. Carmike Cinemas then owned the theater from 1994 until its closure in 1997.
The theater also went by the name of Carmike Cinemas 4.
The Cinema World at 15th Street and Pittsburgh Avenue, which was behind Manson’s opened on January 26th, 1972 as the first multiplex in the Erie region. It never opened as a twin. Grand opening ad posted.
