In New Brighton, Wallasey’s seaside resort on the Wirral, the Trocadero Cinema, advertised as “The Last Word in Picture Houses”, opened on Thursday 1st June 1922 with “Perjury”, starring William Farnum, and a full supporting programme. The Trocadero Symphony Orchestra was under the baton of Mr Bescoby.
Designed by architectural firm Wright & Hamlyn who were based in Warrington. The main frontage was in cream-tinted terracotta, with a heavy pedimented gable arising in the centre, over the entrance. The building itself was of reinforced concrete.
In 1928 the Trocadero came under the control of Gaumont-British. On Monday 24th March 1930 it showed its first ‘talkie’, “The Great Gabbo”, starring Erich von Stroheim. In November 1936 the balcony was reconstructed, re-seated and redecorated.
CinemaScope arrived in May 1955, but only of a sort, as the new screen was only slightly wider than the old one!
However, this was to no avail, as the Trocadero Cinema closed, with only a few days' warning, on either 22nd or 29th (sources vary) September 1956.
The building became a supermarket, but was demolished in 1993.
