Situated on the Promenade, adjacent to the pier in the seaside resort of New Brighton, on the Wirral, the Tivoli Theatre had sporadic spells as a picture house.
It opened on 6th April 1914 with a variety show headlined by Lily Langtry. Although an edition of “Pathe Gazette” was shown at most variety shows, it was not until 1923 when full-time cinema use arrived when it was taken over by showman Pat Collins. This was the Tivoli Super Cinema, which opened on Monday 19th February with “Saturday Night”, starring Leatrice Joy and Conrad Nagel. The Piccadilly Orchestra played “special musical settings”, and “clear pictures” were also advertised. However, from as early as 2nd April, there was a reversion to stage revues.
In October 1928, the theatre was acquired by Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT), who announced they would be presenting “the best and latest of pictures in turn with first class plays and musical comedies”. Their first film presentation was “Ramona”, starring Dolores del Rio, on Monday 8th October. A special musical interlude was provided each evening by the Tivoli Orchestra under the direction of Richard Tomlinson.
“Talkies at the Tivoli” arrived on 19th June 1930 with “Flight”, starring Jack Holt and Lila Lee, utilising a Western Electric(WE) sound system.
However, just a month later, on 14th July, the opening of a variety season was announced, and films were never again screened at the Tivoli Theatre.
The Tivoli Theatre closed in April 1955. The stalls area was used for a while as an amusement arcade before the building damaged by a fire in 1976. It was demolished in January 1978
