In Burnopfield, a village in County Durham, the Co-op Hall was built in 1893 for the Burnopfield Co-operative Society. The extensive building included a billiard room and a large room for meetings and functions. It was presumably this latter space that hosted the film shows when they began in December 1912.
The Grand Cinema is listed in the 1914 Kinematograph Year Book, with 600 seats.
By 1931 an Edibell sound system had been installed and, by 1935, the seating capacity had been reduced to 550. The proscenium was 23ft wide.
The Grand Cinema closed on 1st February 1960.
The building became derelict and something of an eyesore. Thankfully, it has been restored. Among other uses, the ground floor front area became home to a hairdressing salon.
