Heath Cinema 4

The Heath Cinema 4 was built by Mid-America Theatres at 861 S. 30th Street in Heath, Ohio, a city right next to Newark, Ohio. It was the area’s first multiplex. It contained 4 screens, each served by a single projector with a xenon arc lamphouse and the film handled by a platter system. Like many multiplexes, it did not contain any screens wide enough to fully show anamorphic prints. It opened on October 13, 1976. It had an almost immediate devastating effect on The Auditorium Theatre (renamed the Cine One), The Midland Theatre and the Newark Cinema One in Newark. The multiplex was able to offer distributors longer guaranteed playdates and smaller (deductible) per screen expenses. The Heath Cinema Four began getting all the big popular releases from the major distributors. The dwindling audiences at the Cine One (The Auditorium Theatre) forced it to close its doors. Mid-America would later acquire both The Midland Theatre and the Newark Cinema One. They built the Newark Cinema 4 in the existing Plaza Shopping Center in north Newark which opened on December 14, 1984 (It closed in July 2000 and has its own Page on Cinema Treasures).

In 1988, The Heath Cinema 4 essentially moved to the new, nearby Indian Mound Mall and opened, as the Indian Mound Cinema, on November 4, 1988. Both locations were briefly in operation until a heating problem forced the original location to close in February 1989.

Platforms were installed to make the floor in the building level. The building has been the home of the Heath Flea Market and some other businesses.
