Pompano Drive-In

One of Florida’s short-lived airers was the Pompano Drive-In. It opened on January 13, 1952, screening the 1951 drama “Close to my Heart” with Ray Milland and Gene Tierney. Second feature is 1951 drama “4 in a Jeep" with Ralph Meeker and Viveca Lindfors. It was opened by Angelo Monogo and ABC Theatrical Ent. The new drive-in could park 350 cars and featured the latest in-a-car speakers and hard surface ramps. Later on in 1954, the drive-in was sold to Charles E. Myers and L.L Overton dba Coastal Enterprises, INC. On July 27, 1957, the Pompano Drive-In screened its last movies.

In August of 1957, the property was sold to Tunison Properties to be redeveloped into retail and housing. Jack B. Hagerty, theater manager, said “he will continue to manage the Gold Coast Drive-In” also owned by Myers. He said “much of the equipment at the Pompano Drive-In will be utilized in a planned enlargement of the Gold Coast Drive-In, in Deerfield Beach, FL” In November of 1957, Charles E. Myers and L.L. Overton were sued by eight film companies for reporting lower gross admission fees for a 26-month period beginning on March 1, 1954 at the Pompano Drive-In. They were ordered to pay $4,346.77 back to the eight motion picture companies by Circuit Judge James H. Walden.
