Alhambra Theatre

Located in Devonport to the west of Plymouth at 12 Tavistock Street (the street no longer exists) off Fore Street opposite Marlborough Street (which no longer exists). The 1,000-seat Empire Theatre was opened on 26th March 1894. In 1896 it was renamed Metropole Theatre. In 1912 it gained a Cinematograph Licence and reopened as a cinema named Palladium Theatre on 5th August 1912. In January 1913 it was renamed Picturedrome. In February 1914 it was renamed Metropole Picturedrome.

In September 1923 it was closed and a massive rebuild took place. Only the front wall survived. It reopened as the Alhambra Theatre on 19th April 1924 as a theatre staging revues. Seating was provided in stalls, dress circle, balcony and upper circle, plus boxes. Within weeks of opening on 12th May 1924 it screened Charlie Chaplin in “A Woman of Paris” on its first run Plymouth screening. It was operated by the Kingshot Syndicate Ltd. chain. In August 1930 it was equipped for ‘talkies’. At 6pm on Tuesday 22nd April 1941 the Alhambra Theatre was destroyed by German bombs.
